Friendship, History and a Warm Welcome in Burford

One of the great things about Freemasonry is that wherever you go, you'll find a warm welcome waiting.
Recently, a group made the journey from Henley-on-Thames to the beautiful Cotswold town of Burford to visit the Brethren of Wychwood Lodge. What followed was an evening that perfectly demonstrated what Freemasonry is really about – friendship, hospitality, shared values, and learning from one another.
Burford itself is one of Oxfordshire's most historic towns, and its Masonic connections stretch back well over a century. Masons have been meeting in Burford since 1892, with Wychwood Lodge becoming a well-established part of the local community and Masonic landscape. The current Masonic Hall in Sheep Street continues that proud tradition today, serving a number of Masonic Orders from within the Province of Oxfordshire.
As visitors, we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. For newer members of Freemasonry, lodge visits can sometimes feel a little daunting. The reality, however, is quite the opposite. The shared values of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth quickly break down any barriers, and before long conversations are flowing as if everyone has known each other for years.
That is one of the unique aspects of Freemasonry. Whether you meet in Henley, Burford, Oxford, Banbury or indeed anywhere else in the country, there is an immediate sense of friendship and mutual respect. We may belong to different lodges, have different backgrounds and careers, and come from different generations, but we are united by a common set of values and a desire to become better men.
For those of us from Henley also reflected on many of the principles that have shaped our lodge since its foundation. RTTV was established on the values of friendship, integrity, community and personal development. We often describe our lodge through the phrase:
Roots, Truth, Tradition and Values.
Those principles were very much on display throughout the visit.
There was a genuine sense of camaraderie, plenty of laughter, interesting conversation, and the opportunity to learn more about another lodge and its traditions. Visits such as these remind us that Freemasonry is far more than meetings and ceremonies. It is a network of friendships that stretches across towns, counties and even countries.
In an age where many men struggle to find meaningful social connections outside work and family commitments, Freemasonry continues to provide something increasingly valuable: a place where men can meet face-to-face, support one another, share experiences and build lasting friendships.
Our sincere thanks go to the Worshipful Master, Officers and Brethren of Wychwood Lodge for their hospitality and kindness. The welcome we received was a credit to both the lodge and the Province of Oxfordshire, and we look forward to welcoming them to Henley in the future.
Freemasonry has often been described as making good men better.
Visits like this remind us that it also creates friendships that last a lifetime.
If you are a man living in Henley-on-Thames or the surrounding area and would like to discover more about Freemasonry, we would be delighted to hear from you. We are a welcoming, friendly and active lodge where tradition sits comfortably alongside modern life.
