Freemasonry in Henley-on-Thames: Four Values That Matter More Than Ever

Integrity. Friendship. Respect. Service. Four simple values that have the power to make a real difference.

In a world that often feels increasingly divided, where life moves at an extraordinary pace and genuine human connection can sometimes seem harder to find, there is something rather refreshing about an organisation that places friendship, kindness and doing the right thing at the heart of everything it does.

At Round Table Thames Valley Lodge No. 9697 (RTTV), based in the beautiful riverside town of Henley-on-Thames, these aren't simply words written on a page. They are values we aim to live by, both inside and outside our Lodge.

But what do Freemasons actually believe? And what do these four values mean in everyday life?

You might be surprised at just how relevant they are today.

Integrity – Doing the Right Thing, Even When Nobody Is Watching

We all like to think of ourselves as decent people, but integrity is about more than simply being honest.

It's about keeping your word, treating people fairly, taking responsibility for your actions and having the courage to stand by your principles.

At RTTV, we believe that a person's character isn't defined by their job title, their bank balance or the car they drive. It's defined by how they treat others.

Freemasonry encourages us to reflect on our own behaviour, recognise where we can improve and strive to become better versions of ourselves.

None of us is perfect, and Freemasonry doesn't pretend otherwise. What it does offer is an opportunity to keep learning, developing and growing throughout life.

Because ultimately, being a good person isn't about what you say. It's about what you do.

Friendship – More Than Just a Handshake

Ask many Freemasons what they value most about being a member, and there's a good chance their answer will be the friendships they've made.

And we understand why.

At RTTV, our members come from different backgrounds, professions, generations and walks of life. Under ordinary circumstances, some of us might never have crossed paths.

Yet through Freemasonry, we've formed friendships that extend well beyond our regular Lodge meetings.

There's the conversation over dinner, the laughter shared with friends, the support offered when life becomes difficult and the simple pleasure of spending time with people who genuinely enjoy one another's company.

Our Lodge has a strong social character, something we're particularly proud of. We believe that Freemasonry should be enjoyable, welcoming and something members look forward to.

It's not simply about attending meetings. It's about belonging to a group of people who become friends, and in many cases, friends for life.

In an increasingly digital world, there's still nothing quite like sitting around a table, sharing a meal and enjoying good company.

Respect – Different People, Shared Values

One of the wonderful things about Freemasonry is that you don't have to be the same as everyone else to belong.

Our members have different opinions, experiences, beliefs and perspectives on life. And that's a good thing.

Freemasonry teaches us that we can respect one another without necessarily agreeing on everything.

At RTTV, we value people for who they are, not what they do for a living, where they come from or how much they earn.

We believe everyone has something to contribute, and that listening to others is just as important as having our own voice heard.

Freemasonry brings together men of different ages, cultures and backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to treating one another with dignity and consideration.

Members are expected to respect the religious and personal beliefs of others, and political and religious debates are kept out of Lodge meetings.

In a society where differences can sometimes become divisions, perhaps there's something we can all learn from that approach.

Respect doesn't mean we must all think alike. It means recognising that everyone deserves to be treated with fairness and dignity.

Service – Making a Difference Beyond the Lodge

Freemasonry isn't just about what happens within the walls of a Masonic building.

It's also about what we do beyond them.

Giving something back to our communities has always been an important part of Freemasonry, whether that's supporting local charities, raising money for worthwhile causes, volunteering or simply helping someone who needs a hand.

At RTTV, we're proud of our connection with Henley-on-Thames and the surrounding communities.

Our members support charitable causes, contribute to local initiatives and recognise that even relatively small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact.

And service doesn't always mean making a financial donation.

Sometimes it's giving your time, sharing your experience, offering practical help or simply being there for somebody when they need support.

We believe that being part of a community brings with it a responsibility to contribute positively to that community.

After all, making a difference doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes the smallest actions have the greatest impact.

So, What Makes RTTV Different?

There are thousands of Masonic Lodges across England and Wales, each with its own history, traditions and personality.

At RTTV, we have always valued the social side of Freemasonry alongside its traditions and principles.

We're a friendly, approachable group of men who enjoy spending time together, welcoming new faces and making the most of the friendships that Freemasonry creates.

We take our responsibilities seriously, but we certainly don't believe that everything has to be serious!

There's plenty of laughter, conversation and good humour, whether we're attending a Lodge meeting, enjoying dinner together or organising one of our informal social gatherings.

We also recognise that modern life is busy. Work, family and personal commitments all matter, and we want Freemasonry to be something that adds to people's lives, rather than becoming another burden.

Our Lodge meets in Henley-on-Thames, and we're particularly keen to connect with people living or working in Henley and the surrounding villages who might be curious about what we do.

You don't need to know anything about Freemasonry to start a conversation with us.

And you certainly don't need to know a Freemason already.

Is Freemasonry Still Relevant in 2026?

We believe the answer is a resounding yes.

Perhaps even more so today than at any other time.

Think about it.

How often do we hear people talking about loneliness, the loss of community spirit, the difficulty of making new friends as adults or the growing divisions within society?

Freemasonry can't solve all those problems, and we wouldn't pretend that it could.

But it does offer something increasingly valuable: a place to build genuine friendships, meet people from different backgrounds, develop confidence, support worthwhile causes and feel part of something bigger than yourself.

It provides opportunities to learn new skills, take on responsibilities, meet people you might otherwise never encounter and enjoy experiences that stay with you for life.

And at the centre of it all are those four values.

Integrity. Friendship. Respect. Service.

Not particularly complicated ideas, are they?

But imagine how much better our communities might be if we all made a little more effort to put them into practice.

Curious? Come and Get to Know Us.

If you've ever wondered what Freemasonry is really about, we'd love to hear from you.

You won't be expected to understand our traditions, know our history or make any commitments simply because you've asked a question.

We're ordinary people, with ordinary lives, who happen to share a belief that friendship, mutual respect and helping others are worth making time for.

And sometimes, the best way to discover what Freemasonry has to offer is simply to have a conversation with someone who's already part of it.
